Y Chromosomal DNA Variation of the Representative Filipino Population
DY chromosomal DNA has been used as an anthropological tool to study human evolution and prehistoric human migrations. Genetic variations in the Y-chromosome are useful in identifying male sources of biological samples. Due to its strictly paternal inheritance and non-recombining nature Y-chromosomal analysis is a powerful tool in forensic criminal investigations to detect and distinguish male DNA in male/female cell mixtures (body fluids, semen, vaginal exudates etc.) that are common in forensic cases. Furthermore, Y-specific markers are suitable for parentage testing especially in deficiency cases with deceased putative fathers.
The present study aims to characterize Y- markers (STR: DYS19, DYS385, DYS389I, DYS389II, DYS390, DYS391, DYS392 and DYS393) of representative males from the Philippines.
